What's better than a fat bike? An electric fat bike. It doesn't even seem like it was that long ago when fat bikes were just making their way into the bicycle market, and now we have electric versions that take the concept to a whole new level.

The Addmotor Motan is a good example of this idea. You get what would already be a great fat bike on its own, and slap on a powerful motor and battery combo to really turn the bike into a path-conquering machine that can't be stopped.

The other notable thing about adding an electric motor to a fat bike?

It makes it way more versatile, instantly overcoming some of the aspects that otherwise prevent a fat bike from being more than just a bike for less-traveled surfaces.

The Addmotor Motan pays precise attention to detail, and uses some innovative engineering to create one of the most fun bikes you'll ever ride. The ride quality is the same whether you intend on having the motor assist you or not which is always the best bang for your buck electric bike. INTRODUCING THE ADDMOTOR MOTAN ELECTRIC FAT BIKE

At first, the Motan may seem like an ordinary fat bike, with some sort of giant water bottle on the frame. Further examination reveals an alluring fat bike that doesn't explicitly advertise itself as an obvious electric bike, but it's not trying to hide it either.

You get the standard fat bike frame, which is mainly a mountain bike look with a few small adjustments. A front fork gives it more of an aggressive look, which is backed up by three different color options that all center around a black color scheme, with various detailing on the frame or rims.

A hybrid-style saddle and seatpost combination gives the Motan a more relaxed feel, which can be quickly adjusted if you need to alter your riding stance for a certain situation

The drivetrain isn't generous in its speed options, providing 7 total gears, whether you're using the motor or not. Still, the speeds are all well-ratioed, providing ample efficiency in high and low gear settings. This is operated using a simple, responsive trigger shifter. All the components are Shimano TX55.

TEKTRO alloy disc brakes are on both the front and back, operated with matching brake levers that ensure easy control without much hand pressure.

26 x 4-inch Kenda tires account for the "fat" portion of the bike. Their knobby tread gives the bike lots of grip but without making the ride to bumpy when on smoother surfaces. Different PSI amounts can be used for different riding situations.

The motor of the Motan is a workhorse. The 500W rear hub motor is operated using a twist throttle, with variable speed control that you can use to match your exact preferences in the moment. And of course, you can always just let the motor fully take over.

This is powered via a Samsung 48V lithium battery pack that can go for anywhere from 30-55 miles depending on the assistance level, and incline. It's fairly easy to get a maximum speed of 23 mph on flat roads without pedaling.

Fully-depleted batteries take around 4 hours to recharge, which is on the quick end of things given how big the battery is.

WHAT WE LIKE

As we said earlier, the Motan would already be a solid fat bike even without a motor. It has high-level components in all the right areas, specifically with the drivetrain, brakes, and tires.

This bike can tackle everything from snow to sand, and other surfaces that an ordinary mountain bike may struggle with. Add a 500W motor to the equation, and you're off to the races.

The motor's power, control, and speed turn the Motan into a fully capable commuter bike. Yes, an actual commuter fat bike. Crazy, right? It works well, and it's comfortable, fast, and efficient.

In a way, the Motan can sort of feel like a motorbike, only with pedals, and no loud gas-powered engine.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE

It would be nice if we could fully lock out the front shock for a little more firm of a ride when desired. A few extra gears wouldn't hurt either. The Motan is totally fine without these, however.

BUYING ADVICE

If you really want a plush all-around ride, a gel saddle, or a wider saddle with extra cushioning would really help. Also, the Amazon full assembly option is highly encouraged.

CONCLUSION

The Addmotor Motan is easily one of the best fat bikes on the market, regardless of the motor feature. It combines a high level of craftsmanship, superior parts and components, classic fat bike design, and a beast of a motor that can power you through miles of shifty terrain, or to your workplace when the weather is favorable.
